Happy New Year! I hope your year has gotten off to a great start.
We have been busy looking ahead and preparing for upcoming council agenda items, as well as making sure we are making progress on all of our objectives for 2017.
Please continue to stay informed and share your thoughts with us throughout the year as we need and want your feedback. We serve you and must stay focused on doing what is best for our Addison.
Our first Regular Council meeting of 2017 will begin at 7:30 pm Tuesday, January 10 with a very full agenda.
We will actually begin our evening of council work at 5:00 pm with an Executive Session for a periodic review of our pending legal matters. These will include but may not be limited to:
- 4800 Airport Parkway
- A complaint by a former employee
- The ponds or lakes at Vitruvian Park located within the vicinity and east of the intersection of Vitruvian Way and Ponte Ave.
- Farmers Branch Creek
- The lawsuit involving the wind turbine project, and
- A potential development at the southeastern quadrant of Addison Airport.
During our open work session we will cover 2 items. The first will be a presentation and discussion concerning the purpose and proposed process for an asset management plan for the Town of Addison. The second item will be to discuss our housing policy.
While the past council spent almost 18 months listening to community input, reviewing analysis from outside professionals, and hours of discussion and debate to arrive at our current housing policy, a couple of new council members have suggested revisions to the policy.
We will discuss and review those possible revisions as well as others that may be proposed during the work session for possible consideration for approval later on Tuesday evening during the Regular Session.
Our Regular session will include items related to the City Manager’s agreement, a revised site plan for the Starbucks on the corner of Midway and Belt Line, a new restaurant in the Circle called Skinny Pizza, a policy discussion regarding the role of council in employee separation agreements, and a possible revision to our housing policy.
Just a quick reminder that we are still accepting applications for our next Citizens Academy through the end of this month, with the program beginning on February 24. Check out this link for more information and the application.
The only way we are able to keep Addison such a special place is with the active involvement and volunteer work of members of our community. Over the last few years, participation and volunteering in all that we do has greatly increased as we have added opportunities to tap the immense Addison intellectual capital.
In that spirit I want you to know that the packets of information for serving as a council member are available at Town Hall on Monday, January 9, and filing for this Spring’s election begins January 18.
On Wednesday, January 4 at 10:00 am at Dunn Bros. our First Wednesday of the Month Mayor’s Coffee was very well attended as we began the New Year with some warm conversation that turned hot a couple of times.
We briefly discussed the upcoming housing policy and the unanimous feedback was that we do not need to do anything to make it easier to add more apartments in Addison.
There were several comments about the need to keep Belt Line Road nicer looking while we are in the construction phase–everything from too many visible porta-potties, too much trash, and a lack of lane markings are creating some very unhappy Addison residents who are bound to be weary of the project that has simply taken too long.
There was also passionate conversation about the stop signs at Beltway and Les Lacs and the suggestion that the council revisit the City Manager’s decision to install those new signs.
There were concerns also expressed about the lack of updates available on the Les Lacs pond project.
On the bright side, there were positive comments about our economy, tax rate and other amenities that we enjoy as Addison residents.
In spite of some of the negative feedback, I am very encouraged that Addison residents are comfortable offering their feedback on just about any topic, which is a sign to me that our commitment to transparency is paying off!
Monday, January 9, 11:30 am-1:00 pm Economic Development Luncheon with mayor and council at T. Blancos Mexican Cantina, 15207 Addison Road (across the street from Outback), a contemporary, brand new Addison restaurant serving Mexican favorites including quesadillas, nachos, fajitas and margaritas. Come join us for the fun conversation.
Tuesday, January 10, 7:30 pm Regular Council meeting at Town Hall, Executive and Work Session begins at 5:00 pm.
We are off to a great start for 2017! I hope you will continue to send your feedback on any and all Addison issues to me and my council colleagues. Your voice does make a difference.
See you soon,
